Marvellous March for Tasmanian Horses

Friday, April 09, 2010

March has been an outstanding month for Tasmanian bred horses  - in particular graduates of the Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.  The annual Tasmanian sale has developed an outstanding reputation for producing consistent quality performers and the results from March certainly reinforce this fact.  It is also worth noting that during the month of March, 33 races were conducted in Tasmania and 22 of the winners were either Tasmanian-bred or graduates of the Tasmanian yearling sale.

In addition, Tasmanian bred gallopers well and truly held their own during the recent AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.  The Tasmanian-bred successes during the recent Summer Carnival are detailed below, followed by details of the Tasmanian Sale Graduate winners from March.

  • $80,000 thetote.com.au Stakes: Twenty Grand (Weasel Clause – Private Nip)
  • $80,000 Elwick Stakes: Radha Rani (Delgado Brom – Genuine Blonde) a $25,000 Tasmanian Sale Graduate.
  • $200,000 Tasmanian Derby: Geegees Blackflash (Clangalang – La Quita)
  • $400,000 Hobart (3rd) & $300,000 Launceston Cup (2nd): Dream Pedlar (West Quest – Unamah)
  • $50,000 3yo Sale Graduate Classic: Obstinado (Estambul – Shades Of Stubborn), a $35,000 Tasmanian Sale Graduate.
  • $150,000 Gold Soverign Stakes: Strike The Tiger (Bel Esprit – Bonnie Lassy)
  • $100,000 George Adams Plate: Life To The Full (Savoire Vivre – Sinizzor)
  • $100,000 Vamos Stakes: I’m A Hussey (West Quest – Vain Dane) a $10,000 Tasmanian Sale Graduate and the winner of a $100,000 race at Moonee Valley.

Tasmanian Sale Graduate Winners from March 2010

14 March Hobart:
Build A Bridge (E Dubai – Nought) (P/I $18,000 in 2008). This filly hails from one of Runnymede Stud’s winning families and is out of a Danzero mare who is half sister to 12-time winner The Spunk. This filly seems to be improving with racing and age.

15th March Stawell:
Viva Delspec (Savoire Vivre – Alirhap) ($20,000 in 2008)

19 March Ipswich:
Destiny Danzing (Partner's Choice-Tromp Danzing) ($8,000 in 2007)

21 March, Hobart:
Socks (Keep The Faith – Count The Kisses) ($15,000 in 2009)
From Armidale Studs 2009 draft, by the highly promising Keep The Faith form the stakes placed Mukaddamah mare Count The Kisses, the George Blacker trained Socks raced very greenly but was still way too good for his rivals. Look for him to show up in the quality 2yo races later in the season or next season’s 3yo classic races.

Exlusive Speed (Tough Speed - Elusive Lass) ($24,000 in 2008)
Another Armidale graduate, the lightly raced Exclusive Speed showed great gate speed to lead all the way to record his race win. He is another winner for the underrated Miswaki stallion Tough Speed and he is the second foal from the handy Tertian mare Elusive Lass, a half sister to the outstanding Birles Gamble.

Chilsun (Desert Sun – Polar Rose) (P/I $10,000 in 2008)
Chilsun is actually a half-brother to Caulfield Cup winner Arctic Scent. Accordingly, it was hardly surprising to see him break through for his maiden win when he first competed over 1600m.

Prince Obama (Clangalang – Angelika) ($32,000 in 2008)
One of the stand-outs of the 2008 sale, this colt, prepared by Jenny Watson from Macleay Thoroughbreds, looks set to repay Jason Clifford’s sound judgement. This colt was always going to take time to mature, and now a 3yo, Prince Obama easily defeated his older rivals in recording his second win from just 5 starts. Jason has a significant opinion of Prince Obama and he expects him to continue improving with age. Look out for him in the 3yo features later in the season.

Secdolrue (Dolphin Street – Secolo) ($16,000 in 2007)
From the 2007 Armidale Stud draft, Secdolrue looked like being one of the state’s best gallopers after running second in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic at only his second start – and that was after winning at debut by 6.5 lengths. However niggling injuries have prevented this highly promising galloper from showing his true potential, until now. From the unraced Snippets mare Secolo, Secdolrue won his fourth race from just 11 starts, and now appears to be racing injury free. This Brendan McShane-trained galloper can now be expected to graduate to open class in the near future.

21 March Singapore:
Unpickable, (Delgado Brom – Quit Smokin) ($22,000 in 2007)

Devonport 22 March:
Agentdoubleoseven (Special Bond – Honourable Venture) (P/I, $4,500 in 2006)
Like many stayers, this bloke has taken time to mature, but showed plenty of determination to stave off all challengers to win an 1800m race at his first start for Michael Trinder. Now that he has found form, you can expect him to continue to be competitive in restricted staying races during the winter months.

Rocky Times (Ladoni – Fracas) ($16,000 in 2008)
One of the bargain buys from the 2007 sale, Rocky Times is out of the outstanding juvenile Fracas, a multiple listed winner at two, who trained on to be listed placed in the 3yo classics of her year. Another promising galloper by the underrated Ladoni and another horse that Jason Clifford rates highly – this horse is sure to quickly graduate through his classes.

Launceston 28 March:
Larmar Hall (Festival Hall – Elevieve Rose) (P/I in 2007)
A late-maturing type who is out of a winning El Moxie mare, a half-sister to the stakes-placed Larmar Rose. Larmar Hall has been a very consistent galloper and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him go on with it now he has broken through for his first win.

Forbidden Quest (West Quest – Echarpe) ($16,000, 2006 in Armidale Stud Sale)
A graduate of the one – off Armidale Stud sale, Forbidden Quest is out of the former 3yo Cup winner Echarpe. Echarpe also hails from the same family as the outstanding mare Lady Lynette, another graduate of the Tasmanian yearling sale. Forbidden Quest is by Tasmania’s leading sire West Quest who continues to produce leading performers year in, year out.

Avebury Masse (Royal Tryst – Covington) ($6,000 in 2007)
An astute purchase by John Blacker at the 2007 sale, Avebury Masse has been a consistent money spinner for his connections. This was his third win and takes his stakes’ earnings past $50,000. Avebury Masse is by Royal Tryst, a Grenville stallion who served limited mares before succumbing to a paddock accident.
