The winners of the 2yo races conducted in Hobart over the Derby weekend both have relations represented in the upcoming Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
Pleasingly for local connections, most of the feature race prize money available during the annual Summer Racing Carnival has, to date, stayed in Tasmania. And, off the back of the WFA listed win of the locally bred Twenty Grand on 24 January in Launceston, the trend continued in Hobart the following week. The $80,000 Elwick Stakes, a listed 2yo race, was one of the feature races on Derby Day and was won by the exceptionally promising Radha Rani. Radha Rani, by Delago Brom from the former good race mare Genuine Blonde, was purchased by Bob Lynch on behalf of Lynrowan Stud at the 2009 sale.
Radha Rani realised $25,000 for breeder Andrew Scanlon at that sale. The timing of Saturday’s win could not have come at a better time, as Scanlon is offering a colt out of Genuine Blonde by Clangalang at the 2010 sale. The colt is lot 153 and he is the mare’s third foal. Trainer Terry Evans has high hopes for Radha Rani and will now target the $150,000 Gold Sovereign Stakes and the $100,000 Tasmanian Magic Millions Classic later this month.
In addition, lot 2 in this year’s sale is also related to Radha Rani. Brooklyn Park is the vendor for the bay colt by Carnegie out of Jindelara. Jindelara, a winner over 1500m and Moonee Valley place getter, is a half sister to Genuine Blonde.
Racing continued in Hobart on Sunday and the first race was won in impressive fashion by Silver Strike. Silver Strike is a half relation to recent Melbourne listed winner Silver Bullion, and is also represented by a half relation in the 2010 sale, Lot 69, a grey colt by Dash For Cash out of Silver Barbie.
Silver Strike was clearly headed in the straight however showed tremendous courage to fight back and win pulling away on the line. Trainer Michael Trinder has high hopes for the 2yo filly and she will also be aimed at the Gold Sovereign Stakes later this month.
